On the Move

If you’re in West L.A. Saturday night, May 23rd, please come see my painting at Gallery 825. EssESS - smallThe L.A. Art Association is presenting VS a juried group exhibition that pairs artists together to create collaborative works of art. “Ess Ess Mein Kindt” was digitally created using the iPad app Procreate by Lenka Talska and me and printed on metal. It’s a spoof on the saying “if it’s not something, it’s a mother!” This is our take on Jewish mothers…. or any mother, really, insisting that their child eat! In our collaboration, I made the background using several layers and Lenka added the drawing. This show is amazing.

Recently I visited with the Founder and partners of Mobile Art Academy in Palo Alto. The purpose of my visit was to explore how I might expand their successful Northern California iPad art education business into Orange County – potentially expanding to L.A. and San Diego. I’m happy to report that I will be helping to set up and teach iPad art classes starting in June.  I am also attending their yearly Mobile Digital Art & Creativity Summit where they showcase mobile art and offer a variety of digital painting and photo art workshops. Talk about “doing what you love!” I will be sending out details soon. However, it’s a good idea to contact me now if you’d like to participate in or host a class.

A couple of weeks ago I travelled to San Diego to attend the International Mobil(e) Film Festival. We screened 50 short films all shot on an iPhone or other mobile device. Some were less than a minute, others were 5 minutes. They ranged from infomercial to professionally scripted and designed films with paid actors. QiPhone handleuite enlightening to see what’s being done with the iPhone. At the workshop, the filmmakers talked about their gear, their process and what inspired them to use their iPhones to make movies. I came away with a handle that clamps onto my iPhone and also screws onto a tripod. Nice gift!

Making Waves my student art show is coming up June 26th!  I am so proud of all my students. Four of them never had used an iPad before this class, and now three have purchased their own and are becoming art wizards! These 70 and 80-year olds have several collages and iPad art prints to “abandon” – there will be lots of free art. Printable invite here: You’re Invited – Art Show CP June 26. We’ve added a lot of new photos to the shared albums. Check them out here: iPad Art Classes and Collage Art Classes

I’m still having fun shooting photos and making iPad art in my Pipes, Pumps and Motors series. You can see a portion of “Cool on the Roof” in the header of this post.

On the Move London

On the Move London

In anticipation of the airport show, I have started a new On the Move series where I take transport-related photos of wheels, airport ceilings and floors, train stations and depots. Then I collage the images and add color layers. Most of the work is done on my iPad using Procreate. But I also manipulate the photos in other apps like Fragment and Infinity Image. My students love doing this too. While I was on the plane from my local airport to San Francisco, I was able to give a short lesson in Procreate to the woman sitting next to me. I talked her through “On the Move OC” showing her how to manipulate the photos I’d taken in the terminal.

If you’d like to see how some of these are done visit my Storehouse page. I have 9 stories about various paintings up there. You can search by my name Susie Stockholm. If you are asked to sign-up, just do it. It’s a great app and won Apples’ app of the year. Here’s how I made the two “On the Move” collages: How I Made “On the Move” on my iPad

Hope you all are getting inspired to make your own art or add another “Stockholm” to your collection. Check out the Gallery to see what’s still available. I always look forward to hearing about what’s going on in your life.

Much love to you all,

Susie

This is a quick update for those of you who don’t read my Facebook page.

Teaching art, especially iPad art to seniors, is challenging and exciting. Three of my students have already purchased or been gifted their own iPads. Their enthusiasm is boundless and their creations are just fantastic.

I’ve been challenging myself lately in the digital iPad art game. You can see a few of my pieces on Storehouse. If you do a search by my name, you should be able to see all 8 stories about how I created these. Here are links to my newest ones:

“New Orleans” – a digital collage of favorite things

I’ve been making digital collages for people based on personal photos and images that are important to them. See how I made “New Orleans” – a collage/photo montage of favorite things. These are very fun and gratifying. Please call or email me (click here for Contact page) if you’d like me to do these for you. They are printable on metal, acrylic, paper, canvas and just about anything, really.

Some of my big and small acrylic paintings found new homes over Christmas. Very exciting to see them displayed in good light in beautiful contemporary homes.

Artist Outreach Grant Awarded

It’s official! I am the proud recipient of The Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation’s Artist Outreach Grant for 2015. http://picernefoundation.org/Programs.aspx
The purpose of the grant is to support artists in doing something new and different, to have an adventure in the service of others. Victor Nelson, the Executive Director is a class act. He is such a great representative of the Foundation: Helpful, good listener, problem-solver and cheer leader. Thank you, Victor. The Foundation has given me a generous budget for supplies and even for a couple of used iPads to use in the Digital Collage class. But that won’t be enough. So if any of you has an iPad 3 or newer that you’d like to donate, the Foundation will write you a letter on their letterhead that you can use to get a tax deduction. Click here to contact me

EngageThe non-profit I have chosen to work with is Engaged Aging. http://engagedaging.org – their website hasn’t been updated in a while, but you’ll get the idea. They run many arts, sports and education programs in senior apartments in Orange and Los Angeles County. Their VP and site managers are doing everything possible to help me succeed with their residents.

My project is: Teaching COLLAGE (papers, paint, brushes) and DIGITAL COLLAGE (on an iPad or Android tablet)  to seniors in apartment communities in Tustin and San Clemente.  Each class with be 2 hours long, so that’s 4 hours of instruction at each location, weekly. At the end of each quarter we will have an art show or museum visit. Interwoven in each quarter’s class curriculum is an Art Abandonment component. This is where we go out and give away our precious creations, wrapped in clear plastic with a note saying “if you found this, it’s yours to keep or give away.” The Art Abandonment movement has a very active Facebook page where I’m getting lots of ideas for where to leave art:  on benches, hanging from trees or any place where they might be found. https://www.facebook.com/groups/ArtAbandonment/

Luckily I found a teaching buddy, Ruth Allen, who lives in my building. She is 88 years young and has more energy than 5 kangaroos! Ruth is a former high school art teacher who has been itching for something exciting to do recently. I’m ecstatic that she’s on board to assist for all of it. She’s even willing to learn how to use an iPad. She’s going to be a huge help – in fact at our Artist Talk and Demo the other day, Ruth was able to get everyone to participate in creating two holiday cards with her. In the spirit of the grant, we are secretly planning little challenges for each other.

Collaged Holiday Cards The Foundation has allowed me to start teaching a month early so students can make holiday cards for gifts and for staying in touch. The digital collage students are taking pictures of their locale – mostly beaches and piers – of course.  We then turn those into watercolors or other interesting paintings using apps on the iPad or other tablet.  The challenge with the digital class is to find an art app that can do everything I want to teach and that works on both Android and iOS. So far, I’ve only found Sketchbook by AutoDesk. It works on MAC, Windows, iOS and Android. Not sure how well it works on Android, but we are bound to find out!  Once we are happy with images, we can print those out onto greeting cards.

Here’s an example of the San Clemente Pier photo and how it looks after being manipulated in Waterlogged (an iPad app).

I will keep you all updated as we go along. My plan is to document our year together with photos and videos. Perhaps we’ll even create our own book.

Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. My family awaits me, and as always, I’m renewed with their love and hugs.

Susie
